💡 What Do Employers Really Want in Hospitality Talent? + Our Open Jobs + Stuff We Liked / Loved / Wondered about This Week
Eclat Newsletter 2025No13
If you're wondering what skills make you unskippable in hospitality, here’s your cheat code, straight from the THSC’s 2024 report on sub-sector skill demand. 📊✨
Across hotels, food services, tourism, facilities management, and cruise liners—employers are singing the same tune (and it’s not room service jazz 🎷). They’re looking for thinkers, problem-solvers, and adaptive communicators.
Let’s break it down:
🚀 Top Skills Across the Board:
Written & Verbal Communication (60% overall) – If you can’t communicate, you can’t connect. Whether it’s a guest, team member, or vendor—you need to speak and write with clarity.
Complex Problem Solving (49%) – Drama happens. Can you stay calm, find the root cause, and fix it fast? Big win.
Literacy & Numeracy Skills (47%) – Not just reading menus or splitting bills—think SOPs, emails, inventory math, and data reports.
Team Management Skills (46%) – Because great teams don’t manage themselves.
Adaptive Learning (45%) – The industry changes fast. AI, automation, guest preferences... Can you keep up and level up?
Sub-Sector Vibes:
🏨 Hotels: It's all about communication, critical thinking, and adapting under pressure.
🍽️ Food Services: Top ask? Communication and literacy. Bonus if you can problem-solve while the kitchen's on fire (figuratively).
🧹 Facilities Management: Problem-solving kings and queens, with strong team leads and soft skills.
✈️ Tours & Travels: Communication still rules, but team leadership and critical thinking are neck-and-neck.
🚢 Cruise Liners: Wild card alert! Adaptive learning hits 100% (yes, everyone wants this), followed closely by critical thinking.
🎯 TL;DR: Want to be future-ready in hospitality?
Master how you communicate, think, adapt, solve, and lead. That’s your ultimate combo.

Forced Joy At Work
Starbucks Corp. baristas have a new job requirement. In addition to remembering to make your latte with no foam or your cortado with oat milk, they must also write a little missive on your cup. It’s a directive that comes straight from CEO Brian Niccol, who says the handwritten notes foster “moments of connection” — part of his strategy to get more customers into stores to turn around the faltering coffee giant.
In a memo he sent out in January detailing the plan, he had some ideas for those not sure what to say. They could scribble an affirmation (“you’re amazing”), share well wishes (“seize the day”) or simply write a customer’s name or draw a smiley face.
What do you think? Can something like this be manufactured just coz the CEO says it must happen?
We loved this! We wish more colleges / training institutes did this! Kudos
